Why you need an accredited clinic

In Australia the yellow fever vaccine can only be given, and the international certificate only issued, by an approved yellow fever vaccination centre. Travel Doctors Brisbane, the travel medicine service of Oxford Street Medical Centre in Bulimba, is an accredited yellow fever vaccination clinic, so you can be vaccinated and leave with your certificate in one visit.

How the certificate works

Your certificate is issued at the appointment, at no extra charge. It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so plan to be vaccinated at least two weeks before you enter the country that requires it. Since 2016 the World Health Organization has recognised a single dose as valid for life, and Australia follows that rule, so a booster is not normally needed for certificate purposes. Keep the certificate with your passport, and we keep a record of your vaccination at the clinic.

When to book

Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you fly, because yellow fever is usually given alongside your other travel vaccines and some of those need more than one dose. Leaving sooner? Book anyway. The certificate is valid from day 10, so there is often still time. If you fly within two weeks, call us on 07 3902 0099 rather than booking online so we can fit you in.

What it costs

A weekday travel consultation is from $125, with a Medicare rebate of $45.05 (out of pocket $79.95). That covers an assessment of your whole itinerary, not just yellow fever. The yellow fever vaccine and any other vaccines are charged separately at your visit, and we will tell you the price before anything is given. The certificate is included. Fees are payable at the appointment.

Who may not be able to have the vaccine

It is a live vaccine, so it is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor will take extra care with babies under nine months, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with a weakened immune system, people with a history of thymus problems, those with a severe egg allergy, and travellers aged 60 and over, who have a higher risk of serious side effects from a first dose. If the vaccine is not right for you but your destination requires a certificate, your doctor can discuss a medical exemption certificate and how border officials usually treat it.

Booking for families and groups

Each traveller needs their own appointment, including children. Let reception know how many of you are travelling together and we will book you in one after the other where we can. Travel consultations run Monday to Friday at Level 1, 200 Oxford Street, Bulimba, with free parking behind the building and lift access. The Saturday clinic is for general appointments only.
