Argentina Travel Vaccinations: An Australian Guide for 2026

Argentina spans Buenos Aires, the Mendoza wine country, Patagonia's glaciers and the subtropical north around Iguazu Falls. It is one of South America's more developed countries, so the travel-health list is moderate — with one region-specific point worth getting right around yellow fever.

This guide covers the vaccinations and precautions Australians should consider for Argentina in 2026. It is general information only and depends on your itinerary and health history.

Do you need vaccinations to travel to Argentina?

Argentina has no yellow fever entry requirement — you will not be asked for a certificate to get in, regardless of where you have travelled from. That is a common misconception worth clearing up. Yellow fever vaccination is, however, recommended for some travellers for their own protection, depending on which part of the country you visit. See below.

Recommended vaccinations for Argentina

For almost every traveller

• Hepatitis A — food- and water-borne; recommended for essentially all travellers.
• Typhoid — recommended for most trips, particularly outside the main cities and for longer stays.
• Dengue — recommended for most travellers to consider. Dengue is active in Argentina and a dengue vaccine is now available; suitability depends on your age and prior dengue history.
• Routine vaccines — tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, MMR (measles) and seasonal influenza should be up to date.

Depending on your trip

• Hepatitis B — for longer stays or possible medical, tattoo or personal exposures.
• Rabies — considered for some travellers; discuss for rural travel, animal contact or longer stays.
• Chikungunya and mpox — considered for some travellers depending on itinerary and personal circumstances.

Yellow fever: the northern regions

This is the Argentina-specific decision. Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Mendoza and the southern two-thirds of the country carry no yellow fever risk. The far north-east — including the area around Iguazu Falls in Misiones province and parts of the northern border regions — is considered to carry a risk, and yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some travellers going there. If Iguazu or the northern provinces are on your itinerary, raise it at your consult so it is assessed properly rather than guessed at.

Mosquito-borne illness and malaria

There is currently a wider chikungunya increase across the Americas, so bite prevention matters in Argentina as much as vaccination: repellent with DEET or picaridin, covering up, and screened or air-conditioned rooms. Mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya bite during the day as well as at dusk. Malaria is not a practical concern — there is no sustained local transmission, though sporadic cases are possible in some areas along the Bolivian border, so mention that leg if you have one.

Food and water

Travellers' diarrhoea is the most common illness, at moderate risk across the country and minimal in good accommodation. Tap water in Buenos Aires and major cities is generally treated, but bottled water is sensible in rural and northern areas; be cautious with ice and raw foods, and a travel doctor can prescribe a treatment kit to carry.
